Use of MY NUMBER started on Jan 1, 2016. MY NUMBER is a unique 12-digit number assigned to all residents in Japan respectively, and it is utilized in fields related to social security, taxation, and disaster management. Each local government which plays a central role of MY NUMBER system, should strive to both ensure sufficient protection of personal information and promote utilization of personal information. As the Commissioner of the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC), I fulfill my duties to ensure the protection of individual’s rights and interests by supervising and monitoring proper handling of personal information.

I have devoted myself to local autonomy for many years. Before joining the Commission, I served for twelve years as the Mayor of Kawasaki City. By the amendment of the Act on the Protection of Personal information, the authorities of the PPC have been expanded. Taking advantage of my experiences and viewpoints of the local autonomy, I would like to contribute to substantial discussions in the PPC.
