The Personal Information Protection Commission of Japan (PPC Japan) designates 30th May to 5th June 2022 as this year’s Privacy Awareness Week, and intensifies its effort to raise awareness about the importance of personal information. As a member of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA), the PPC Japan has been celebrating Privacy Awareness Week every year since 2018.

While it is difficult to expect when the COVID -19 pandemic will be fully contained, it has changed our lifestyle drastically, and we use personal information online more than ever before on daily basis, such as through online shopping and participating in online events.

These services are convenient and easy to use with your smartphone or computer, but at the same time, a large amount of personal information is being held by the business operators which handle these services. If this personal information is leaked for some reason, the leaked personal information may spread unknowingly, and it is difficult to completely delete it.

Have business operators handled personal information correctly in the following situations?

  • When notifying your business partners of a next product launch event, have you sent multiple e-mail addresses together in the To and Cc fields?
  • When using a cloud service, have you stored personal information in the cloud before confirming the setting method properly?
  • When acquiring personal information, have you specifically display the purpose of use in a place that is easy for service users to access?

Various publications and themed videos, etc. which the PPC Japan has prepared are available on our website.

In particular, this year, from April 2022, the 2020 Amended Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) has been enforced, and direct reports of the leakage to the PPC Japan were obliged when meeting certain requirements.

Also, it is important for individuals as well as business operators to handle personal information with caution on a daily basis.

In addition to training videos regarding social media and online games, where you should be careful about the handling of personal information on a daily basis as typical cases, various tools including comics and pamphlets are available on our website, so that individuals can learn about the handling of personal information and the personal information protection system.

When children are using social media or playing online games, they might post their own or their friends’ name, school names, or photos that show their addresses, without realizing the consequence, and it can be dangerous. I invite you to take a moment to discuss and set some rules to use online sites with your family such as involving adults when children use online services.

Personal information, when used appropriately, can make our lives more convenient and enriching. I would like to ask you once again to keep in mind the appropriate handling of personal information.

If you have any questions about the protection of personal information, come explore our website for further information, or contact us at Inquiry Line.

I hope the Privacy Awareness Week will help you to reflect and think about your privacy and handling of personal information.
