Japan became an accredited member of International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners.
~Chairman Horibe attended the 39th conference~

Chairman Horibe attended the 39th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners (ICDPPC) held in Hong Kong from Sep 25 to 29 in 2017.

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC), having been participating observer in the ICDPPC since 2014, was accredited as a member at the 39th conference, following the fact that the supervising authority over business operators has been unified to the PPC accompanying the full enforcement of the amended Act on the Protection of the Personal Information since May 2017.

The Conference discussed a range of issues including data protection systems in respective countries, cross-border data transfer, etc. In the session of “Data Protection in the East” on Sep 28, Chairman Horibe delivered a speech, titled “Privacy Culture and Data Protection Laws in Japan,” on the history of privacy protection and personal information protection legislation in Japan as well as the PPC’s establishment and its activities.

The PPC hosted a workshop on the APEC Cross-border Privacy Rules system, as a side event of the 39th ICDPPC. At the workshop, with the participation of the governments from the U.S., Republic of Korea and Singapore, Accountability Agents from Japan and the U.S. and private companies in addition to the PPC, presentations and discussions were held on the promotion of participation to and the future of the CBPR system.
