The Personal Information Protection Commission of Japan (PPC Japan) is a national administrative agency tasked with ensuring the proper handling of personal information in order to protect the rights and interests of individuals while ensuring due consideration of the value of personal information, based on the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the organization's founding.
PPC Japan has designated the period spanning from Monday, June 22nd to Sunday, June 28th of this year as Privacy Awareness Week and will engage in PR and awarness-raising activities.
The initiative is a part of the Privacy Awareness Week awareness campaign on the protection of privacy carried out by 20 other organizations in 14 countries and regions, including PPC Japan, as participating members of APPA (Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities).
Amid the rapid changes taking place in the environment surrounding personal information in Japan and overseas due to the advancement of new technologies, such as generative AI, along with the progress of digitalization, we will post educational posters throughout Japan, display digital signage advertisements in stations, monitors in trains, domestic airports and convenience stores, advertise on the Internet, open a dedicated web page for Privacy Awareness Week, and disseminate information through PPC Japan's official social media accounts (such as on X and YouTube). Through these activities, we aim to deepen the awareness of the importance of personal information among the people, business operators and administrative bodies that handle personal information, as well as broaden people's understanding of PPC Japan's roles and activities.
Have you ever been asked to agree to terms of use or a privacy policy, or have you ever seen something displayed to the effect that you have agreed to such when making use of online services or generative AI?
These describe the purpose of use of personal information in relation to those services and how that information will be handled.
Confirming the purpose of use in advance enables you to prevent personal information from being used in unintended ways.
We hope that you will take this opportunity to reflect on the topic of the handling of personal information, starting with confirmation of purposes of use.
Business Operators are also required to clearly define the purposes of use of personal information they obtain, present information on them to users in an easy-to-understand manner, and handle the relevant information appropriately within the scope of the purposes presented.
Please take this opportunity to check whether the purposes of use are clear in terms of your own company's terms of use and privacy policy.
In order to make your lives more convenient and prosperous through the correct handling of personal information, we would like to ask once again that you endeavor to ensure that the proper handling of personal information is undertaken.
PPC Japan has posted various materials on its official website, X, YouTube, etc., including videos, cartoons, and pamphlets that explain the topic of personal information handling and personal information protection systems in an easy-to-understand manner.
If there are any business operators who have any questions or concerns about personal information, please see the FAQ section on our website, contact the PPC Question Chat, or ask our Inquiry Line for Act on Protection of Personal Information.
I sincerely hope that the Privacy Awareness Week will serve as an occasion for you to undertake action such as once again contemplating how you handle personal information.
Dr. TEZUKA satoru, Chairperson, PPC Japan
